Climate change is accelerating and extreme weather events are becoming more  common. Consequently, this brings heavy rain, overloaded sewers and an increased risk of basement flooding. Therefore, the City of Toronto is helping homeowners flood-proof their basements through their Basement Flooding Protection Subsidy Program.

The City is offering homeowners a subsidy of up to $3,400 per property to install flood protection devices. This offer applies to single-family, duplex and triplex residential homes.

The Basement Flooding Protection Subsidy Program’s Eligible Work Includes:

  • Installation of a backwater valve. Subsidized up to a maximum of $1,250.
  • Installation of a sump pump. Subsidized up to a maximum of $1,750.
  • Severance and capping of a home’s storm sewer or external weeping tile connection. Subsidized up to a maximum of $400.
